"Stick all the bits of brain in a plastic bag, Barry."
So anyway, I figure it's going to be a relaxing weekend.
Yeah.
Saturday turns sour mere minutes after I say "see you" to my wife and head out for various errands. First there's the matter of the crowded gas station. So I had to wait a bit, who doesn't? So I had to back up a bit to let some person with barely passable driving skills fidget and fuss her car out of its space at the pump. Who then says I deserve to have that space stolen from me by some complete jerk who just pulled in from the freeway?

That's my box, captain!
Okay, who makes this stuff up? I happened to click on "My MSN" this morning, to find this erroneous horoscope for Scorpio:
"Scorpios are often very afraid of solitude, dear Scorpio. That explains why they are always trying to surround themselves with people, or be a part of a family or a team."
Afraid of solitude? Always trying to surround myself with people? what about us Scorpios who prefer solitude and become annoyed by prolonged contact with people?
Hmph. Even a random geek horoscope from BBspot isn't that interesting today:
"Don't listen to Lenny in accounting about that command. "Format C:" does NOT save the year-end settlement reports.
Well, poop. I hope this isn't an indication of how the rest of the day will go. Maybe I should take a break and watch Peter Jackson's "Braindead." Yeah, that's the ticket.

Gentelmen you can't fight in here, this is the war room!
You know...you hear the funniest things working at a college. Today's funny thing: "What does reading have anything to do with English?"
I wonder...if I'll ever have occasion to hear Mari Ijima live? Her sets are usually around an hour or so, so how do I tell Kyoko I'm going to drive over an hour to see another Japanese woman perform for about an hour. In wife terms, these things don't add up.
I missed Saturday's gig mainly because I was attending the memorial for my friend's wife. Mari, on the other hand, is performing again in February. Then I think the next time she plays live is in Japan.
Oh BY THE WAY
UCR finally coughed up the proof of my Bachelor's Degree. June of 2003 I walked, but I get the piece of paper in January 2005? Finally I can begin my graduate studies (there go my savings...)
Two bands I'd love to see live: Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and Bikyoran.

Hope against hope...
What a strange thing it is to read a headline anonymously listing people who have died in these storms...like, "A 35-year old woman from San Bernardino"...and I realize, damn, that's my friend's wife. A good, good man, and an asset to Riverside Community College. His wife meant a great deal to him - he talked about her often and fondly. I barely met her once, as they were guests at my Western wedding, but she seemed a fine human being.
But...as of a few hours ago they had yet to find a body. They're still finding suspected tsunami victims alive here and there...so who knows.

What's yellow, sits in a tree and it extremely dangerous?
So anyway, I checked out my Geek Horoscope at BBspot:

MOCHI - The Deadly Food!!!
Hokay, for those who don't know, Mochi is a food product made from compressing rice. Mochi cakes are about the size of the average credit card, except they're about 3/4th of an inch thick. It's Japanese tradition to eat Mochi cakes on New Year's Day. They're served in a hot soup called Zoni, with each region having it's own particular flavoring for the stock. Thus, Zoni and Mochi will taste different in Hiroshima as opposed to Sapporo, etc.
Also, every year, people choke to death on the stuff. No foolin'.
From the Mainichi Daily Online:
"Four people died after choking on sticky mochi rice cakes on New Year's Day and the following day in the Kanto region"
"A 79-year-old man living in Edogawa-ku, Tokyo, choked on mochi at around 5:40 p.m. on Saturday while dining with his family"
"By Sunday night, 25 others -- 20 men and five women -- were transported to hospital by ambulance after choking on rice cake"
"In the Gunma Prefecture village of Niisato, a 77-year-old man choked to death on mochi on Saturday, while a 75-year-old man of Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, and an 80-year-old man living in the Saitama Prefecture city of Honjo suffocated to death after choking on rice cakes Sunday morning"
My wife served Zoni and Mochi New Year's morning...

Right behind the davenport!
So then, I hope everyone enjoyed the Dickless new-year's eve. I know many of us craved Dick this season, but medical conditions were simply too prohibitive.
Not that I have anything against Regis, but like many others I really like Dick. I can't imagine ringing in the new year without at least a little Dick to tide me over.
I'd wish a Happy New Year to one and all...but the next four years promise to hold nothing but more of the same. Hunker down, hold tight your loved ones, and we might just weather the storm.
